Meet Alexandria. She’s a sales professional with a passion for communication. Working specifically within inside sales, she sells Worklife solutions. Her best sales technique? “Building trust with my customers and problem-solving for the various challenges they’re experiencing,” she explains. Different from outside sales, which involves more face-to-face interaction, inside sales reps complete most of their communication digitally, either on the phone or via email. This is the type of communication that she prefers.
I sat down with Alexandria to better understand what she loves about working in sales, how she developed her career at Staples, and why someone should join her team. Here’s what she had to say:
What do you love about sales?
I love that every customer has a different need, want, and personality – each situation is unique.
Describe your career journey. What led you to Staples?
In 2013, I was a single mom with two little boys. I was bartending full-time when a friend, who worked at Staples, suggested I try a different career path that would be a better fit for my lifestyle. Of course, with such a big life change, I was hesitant at first, but then I thought about the perks that would result from the career switch: regular hours, steady pay, benefits and most importantly, working for such a huge company. Given my customer service experience, I applied for an inside sales position. After leaving the interview, I knew this job was for me. I would have the opportunity to learn a new business, while still utilizing my communication, programming, and selling skills. I have now been with Staples for nearly six years and have had two promotions during my tenure. I took a leap of faith and it has been one of the best decisions of my life.
What do you enjoy about #StaplesLife?
What I enjoy about the culture here is how the company values its employees and recognizes the hard work individuals contribute to the team. Staples is one huge family and leadership looks after its employees professionally and personally. I have had some great experiences with management supporting my career development within the organization and I continue to flourish.
What’s your favorite memory thus far?
That’s a tough one… it’s hard to choose. But I think our 2019 sales conference in Orlando was one for the books. I had never experienced an event as powerful and inspirational at Staples before. The team put a lot of time and effort into making each department feel recognized and appreciated. This brought tremendous value and gratitude to employees across the board.
What attributes do you think make a successful salesperson?
To be a successful salesperson one must be driven, agile, accountable, and a skilled communicator. On top of this, they must also understand time management and possess the ability to build rapport and adapt to different customer personalities.
Why should someone join your team?
Someone should join my team because we share a passion and dedication for helping customers. We’re a mini support system, encouraging one another to thrive. Staples is constantly growing and the management on my team is constantly mentoring, coaching, and motivating their employees.
