The holidays are upon us, and despite the hustle and bustle, it’s generally a time to feel especially grateful for all we have. For me, it’s also a great time to think of ways in which I can give back to others and the perfect time to do this is on Giving Tuesday. In case you’re unfamiliar, Giving Tuesday began when two foundations, 92nd Street Y and United Nations Foundation, joined forces in 2012 to create a day dedicated to giving and celebrating generosity. Created in response to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday falls on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It’s an opportunity to rally around community spirit and feeding the soul.
At Staples, when it comes to giving back to our community, we’re all in. Our associates are passionate and love to get personally involved. Some of the ways in which we give back is through company-hosted events focused on community service, mentoring, or fundraising. Last year, we held a backpack drive with Cradles to Crayons to fill 20,000 backpacks with school supplies for disadvantaged students, and this year we got together to spin for a cure to benefit the American Diabetes Association.
Another unique way in which Staples employees give back is through our Share Fund. The program, funded by our associates, offers relief for employees in need of severe financial assistance due to significant events such as natural disasters, catastrophic personal events, or other circumstances beyond control. Our associates can elect to donate in several ways, including automatic payroll deduction or by making a one-time donation.
“I greatly appreciate the Share Fund grant that was awarded me. It has been significantly helpful in getting the road back under my feet after the storm that damaged my home. I’m moving ahead now, in part, because of the thoughtfulness of the team who, by donating, act for the good of all of us, and each of us. It is a kindness I will not forget.”Anonymous Staples Employee
The Share Fund team receives grant requests containing stories of tragedy and loss, and thanks to our employee’s generosity, the program helps associates through these challenging times. We are proud to say that these funds have helped more than 2,000 associates in need with over $1.7 million in grants.
At Staples, we inspire our associates to make a difference in their communities through volunteering and fundraising for the causes they are passionate about, including helping their fellow teammates in need. For this, I am so proud to be a part of the team. This Giving Tuesday, and throughout the holiday season, I challenge you to join us and take a moment to give back to a cause close to your heart.
